Camden: High and Low

Ken kindly fills in for me yet again as I keep up with our guests, gardens and goats…thanks Ken!

Camden, Maine is an easy forty minute drive south from Searsport Shores. It’s a delightful place to visit for lunch and sightseeing. On this trip, we drive up the famous Mt. Battie Auto Road for spectacular views of Camden harbor and Penobscot Bay. It’s a clear sunny day and at an elevation of 780 feet its an easy seven minute drive up the mountain. The observatory was built to last sturdy in 1921 and its about forty steps to the top and what a view! The panoramas are all the way to Blue Hill and Acadia National Park. It is somewhat uncommon in the Northeast to have mountains in such close proximity to ocean so in the places it does happen like here and Acadia, its really something to see. A nearby plaque commemorates a point perhaps close to where Maine native Edna St. Vincent Millay penned the long poem, “Renascence”.

ALL I could see from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood;
I turned and looked the other way,
And saw three islands in a bay.
So with my eyes I traced the line 5
Of the horizon, thin and fine,
Straight around till I was come
Back to where I’d started from;
And all I saw from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood. 10

After driving back down enjoy lunch on the docks in Camden Harbor at one of the quality restaurants and watch the boats go in and out. It’s a bit warm today but an ocean breeze is a nice accompaniment to steamers, crab salad and cold draft beer. Enjoy.

The photos posted here only capture a small fraction of the experience. If you look closely you will see the tower in the center of the mountain treeline taken from the dock.
