Let’s Play Pay it Forward (PIF)

Needle Felted NymphYou know about random acts of kindness. I try to live every day of my life on the belief that what comes around, goes around. I know, without a hint of a doubt, I have been blessed beyond logic. The families and individuals who trickle in and out of my world are wonderful.

The other day I was cruising the internet, casually peeking at all sorts of blogs when I stumbled upon Becky’s beautiful site Sittin’n’Spinnin’. She made an offer to Pay it Forward…I took her up on the offer.
If you’re like me, you have a vague notion of how to play PIF but I wanted to do a bit research…and this is what I found from the PayIt Forward Foundation:

“Pay It Forward” is a book written by Catherine Ryan Hyde, but it’s also an idea. It’s an action plan within a work of fiction. But does it have to be fiction? We’re hoping not. In fact, since the book was released in January of 2000, a real-life social movement has emerged, not just in the U.S. but worldwide. What began as a work of fiction has already become much more.

Reuben St. Clair, the teacher and protagonist in the book “Pay It Forward,” starts a movement with this voluntary, extra-credit assignment: THINK OF AN IDEA FOR WORLD CHANGE, AND PUT IT INTO ACTION. Trevor, the 12-year-old hero of “Pay It Forward,” thinks of quite an idea. He describes it to his mother and teacher this way: “You see, I do something real good for three people. And then when they ask how they can pay it back, I say they have to Pay It Forward. To three more people. Each. So nine people get helped. Then those people have to do twenty-seven.” He turned on the calculator, punched in a few numbers. “Then it sort of spreads out, see. To eighty-one. Then two hundred forty-three. Then seven hundred twenty-nine. Then two thousand, one hundred eighty-seven. See how big it gets?”

Now let me pass the blessing to you. I will mail, within 4 weeks, a handmade fiber gift to the first three people to post a comment to this blog, please include your snail mail address. As any act of kindness will spur further acts of kindness, please don’t let the chain end with you and post this offer to your blog or bulletin board.

  1. I like knitting for charity. Since you’ve pledged to knit for the first three people to comment, I’ll donate three items to Manna, Inc. here in Bangor.

  2. Hi Astrig,

I have never learned to knit, but if I’m one of the three, I’ll donate some art supplies (my choice of what) for classes this summer at the campground. Heck, if there’s room for me to do so, maybe I’ll even get to teach a class or two this year! 🙂

  3. Hi Gale,
I’ll send you a fibery treat with pleasure…but please Pay it Forward by doing something wonderful for three other people or organizations in order to keep the energy flowing…maybe there’s a children’s ward at a Fort Lauderdale hospital that would be thrilled with some art supplies or maybe even a class or two…but I certainly accept willingly your offer to teach a class here this summer!

  4. Oh, I see. Since I’m fighting another sinus infection, I misunderstood. I’m always painting boxes for the Treasure Box program and delivering to the Shriner’s in Boston and Springfield. Will ante up with another cause pdq to pay it forward! Thanks! 🙂

Have you ever had ‘Weed Baskets’ taught at the campground? They’re fun and pretty quick. I think I have enough on hand supplies for the basket materials. Do the gals already have their basket tools?

I’m leaving in the morning for my drive to Florida. I’ll check back here in a few days.

    Thanks!

    Gale
